Our Relationship with Wirral St John’s Hospice

By Katy Lehman

If you have been with us on our journey for a while, you will probably know that Wirral St John’s Hospice is a cause close to our hearts.

Back in 2017 our Director Chris’s Dad, Colin, was one of the hospice’s at-home patients, and the care he received was second to none. Thanks to their amazing at-home service, Colin’s wife Sue, Chris and his wife Jo, their daughters Pippa and Summer, Chris’s younger brothers Paul and Phil, and their partners Beth and Emma were able to be by Colin’s side in the final months of his life.

Colin was diagnosed with esophageal cancer in September 2016, just four months prior to his passing, and spent time from November in hospital receiving treatment. As his illness progressed, Colin returned home in January 2017, which is when Wirral St John’s Hospice’s At Home Healthcare Assistant, Helen Marsh, became involved in his care. Helen worked alongside brilliant Marie Curie nurses who are also often referred and partnered by the hospice to bring their specialist care into people’s lives.

Unfortunately, Colin passed away that week. Thanks to Helen’s natural compassion and amazing listening skills, he was able to open up about his wishes after his passing. Chris always has nothing but positive things to say about the service that Wirral St John’s Hospice provided, not only to his dad, but the whole family.

Because of this, Chris has made it his mission to do what he can to help raise funds for the hospice. He completed sponsored walks, and established an annual memorial golf day at Caldy Golf Club where Chris, his dad and brothers played regularly for many years. Chris even won a prestigious trophy, The Jubilee Trophy at the club, meaning his name will be permanently on the winner’s board!

Since Nook Mortgages’s establishment in 2019, we have been making quarterly donations to Wirral Hospice St John’s. Our most recent donation consisted of lots of Easter treats for the patients and amazing staff, and a PlayStation for patients and visitors to play together – it’s something everyone can enjoy!

As a business, and individually, we’re really passionate about healthcare and the NHS which is why we will always support it in any way that we can. When the UK was in full lockdown last year, we partnered with Dodo Pizza and Wok and Go to deliver food to the hardworking NHS and hospice staff across the Wirral, with over 2,500 pizzas sent to key workers in the region!
