Cost of Living Crisis: Our Top Tips

By Katy Lehman

The cost of living is something that is on most people’s minds at the moment, and with the
temperature dropping, Christmas coming up, and prices rising, it’s only natural to feel stressed!
Don’t worry too much though, because we’re sharing some of our top tips to get you through…

LOOK INTO REMORTGAGING
Our first time is of course mortgage related! If your fixed mortgage rate is about to run out in the
next few months, now is a good time to put a plan in place to ensure you don’t end up on a
variable interest rate, which often is a lot higher. By remortgaging, you can be confident in
knowing you’re getting the best deal for you, and you can know exactly where you are with your
budgeting each month.

TURN YOUR HEATING DOWN BY TWO DEGREES
When the temperature drops and you really feel that chill, it’s often not possible to leave the
heating off. Instead, turn it down to one or two degrees lower that you would normally have it.
You’ll still be keeping warm, but it can make a difference to your heating bill.

SWITCH TO ENERGY SAVING LIGHT BULBS
Not only are they better for the environment, but they are an easy way to cut your energy bills
down! Lighting accounts for 11% of the average UK home’s energy consumption, so you can
save some cash by making this simple swap.

USE BUDGETING APPS
It can be hard to keep track of your spending sometimes, so budgeting apps are a great way to
keep on top of things. Try out a few and see which one you like the best.

CHECK COMPARISON SITES
When choosing things like providers, always compare costs on sites such as Money Super
Market, or Go Compare.

SEE IF YOU’RE ELIGIBLE FOR HELP
You may be entitled to government grants and extra support. You can check with Citizens Advice
Bureau to see if you are eligible for any benefits, which could in turn grant you access to cheaper
utility deals and council tax reductions.

MAKE THE MOST OF THE SALES
If you’re planning on buying Christmas gifts or something else that you need in the next couple of
weeks, make the most of the Black Friday Sales where you may be able to pick your items up for
a fraction of the price!
